Better Joomla Content Editor

The content editor the comes with Joomla is ok for getting started, but pretty quickly you'll want more.

My search almost started with image editing and management.  The default Joomla editor did a horrible job resizing images... even if I grabbed a corner it would not preserve aspect ratio.  Then there was other media: documents and audio/video.  I was tired of jumping back-and-forth between the Joomla media manager and the article editor.  I wanted better file management. 

A little research led me to the JCE editor.  The core is free, the plugins (where the most value is found, IMO) are (at time or writing) $30.  The price point was low enough for me to give it a try.  Glad I did, I'm using it now.  If I move on to what I consider a better editor, I will surely come back and update this article.

For now, if you are still running an out-of-the-box Joomla editor I recommend you at least take a look at JCE.
